Climbing Wall development survey

Hey folks!

We have a customer survey up and running here.  We're looking to get some feedback from you all with regards to what sort of changes, additions and developments you would like to see in the wall.

Before you get too excited; no we don't have a blank cheque book unfortunately.  Our plan for the future obviously depends on finances and therefore having small, medium and large scale plans that customers have helped influence should help light the way forward.

If you have any other comments or ideas please get in touch!

Big Thank You

Transition Extreme would again like to extend its thanks to both Craigdon Mountain Sports and Berghaus for their generous support of last nights superb presentation from Leo Houlding. I think I speak for all of the 100 plus people who made it last night in saying it was a mesmerising and inspirational presentation. At times I felt like I was on the port a ledge with them!!!

A huge thank you goes to Leo himself for going well beyond the call of duty and sharing with us some of his more recent exploits paticularly those in Yosemite and the first free ascent of The Prophit. The A1 beauty pitch must rank as one of the most beatuful lines in the world?

Thank you also to everyone who made a donation to Transition Extreme last night after the show we raised £124. But remember its never too late to make a donation if like many last night you came away without any money we would be delighted for your support at anytime just drop off at reception.

Leo Houlding!

Did I mention? Leo Houlding is coming all the way to Aberdeen - next Monday 8th November at 8pm. Seriously, you'd be crazy to miss this...no need to pre-book, just show up. Tickets are free, gratis, nada - courtesy of Berghaus and Craigdon Mountain Sports.

Tooling at Transition

Thanks to everyone who supported the Transition round of the Scottish Tooling Series at the weekend. Now we're back to normal - no more logs till next year...?
Here's just a couple of pics from the weekend - check out the rest of Ryan's pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ryanslater/

Leo Houlding at Transition!

We are delighted to confirm that LEO HOULDING will be coming to Transition next Monday 8th November at 8pm - easy to remember. Easy to afford too - the event will be FREE!

That's next Monday - clear your diary now!

Due to the generous support of Craigdon Mountain Sports and Berghaus we are able to offer this fantastic event absolutely free of charge.

Hear Leo talk about his latest adventures, watch some of his latest exploits on film and enjoy a question and answer session with one of the most prolific British climbers. I was just watching Hard Grit again the other day and couldn't believe how young he looked climbing End of the Affair E8 6c back in 1998 - amazing. I can't wait!

There will be a collection for Transition Extreme (Registered Charity SC 036358) during the talk - all donations welcome.

Circuit topos available on this blog

We're fine-tuning these circuits - thanks for all your ideas and feedback. We've decided not to have the circuits printed out on wee cards at the wall (waste of paper) - so if you want your own sheet to tick off the problems, you can download and print from here.

We've graded the problems now as well (except for the white), so you have a bit more of an idea what you're climbing. Let the grade debates commence!

!! Wall closures 29th & 30th October !!

Please be advised of the following wall closures next week. These are due to the Scottish Tooling Series which we are hosting on the Saturday.

FRIDAY 29th - the climbing centre will remain open all day but with a lot of routesetting to do there will be significant disruption to the bouldering area and all roped lines.

SATURDAY 30th - the climbing centre will be closed all day except for our taught classes which are unaffected.

We apologise for the disruption. The best way round this is to get yourself entered into the Tooling Series competition - www.scottishtoolingseries.co.uk

Or if you don't fancy swingin' your axes, everyone is welcome from 6pm for a buffet dinner, lecture and film showing - see post from last week. Please do come along - for £10 you'll be getting a very sociable evening and a fascinating talk from one of Scotland's leading winter climbers.

30th October - Simon Richardson Talk & Film

As we mentioned at the end of the last boulder competition - we are proud to present local winter climbing legend Simon Richardson discussing last winter's season. His illustrated lecture will be followed by a screening of the new hot aches film 'The Architect'. All this washed down with a hot buffet served in the climbing wall - this will be a friendly night which comes at the end of the Scottish Tooling Series round - see http://www.scottishtoolingseries.co.uk/scottish-tooling-series-2010/

£10 tickets available on the door (£5 for STS competitors)

Wednesday Social

Are you stuck without a partner?

Have you just done an Intro course and need a bit of extra help?

Maybe you haven't climbed in a while and could do with some reminders?

Just feeling sociable?

Every week at Transition you can now come and join the in the Wednesday Social. Just turn up between 6:30 - 7pm, go to the balcony above the climbing wall where one of our very friendly instructors (this week it's Pete) will help sort you out into groups & pairs for climbing.
After 7pm we go down to the wall and get climbing with help from staff - find out which are the latest new routes, get some technique tips and perhaps a few safety reminders.

This doesn't cost any extra - just turn up and register at reception as normal. No booking required, the only proviso is that you must already be a registered climber here at Transition - or a novice being signed in for the night.
Remember - you can turn up on your own and we'll do our best to match you up for a climb.
We hope to see you soon!

Wild Weekend Fund-raiser

Transition Extreme are facilitating a fund-raising weekend on the 19th and 20th June.  The aim for participants is to climb the height of their chosen category (Graham, Corbett or Munro) through rock climbing.  The summer Solstice is on the 21st June so the weekend will give plenty of time and hopefully some amazing scenery to get climbing in!

You can take part at local crags if you only climb single pitch venues or head out to the hills to climb on some big mountain routes anywhere you like in the country.  There is no instruction offered so if you don't know what you're doing but still want to take part then you can team up with other climbers.

You will have 48hours from 00:01 on Saturday 19th to 00:00 on Sunday 20th to complete the challenges.

The height challenges are:

  • Climb the height of the tallest Graham:  Beinn Talaidh, 761m, Mull, NM625347
  • Climb the height of the tallest Corbett:  Beinn Dearg, 914m, Torridon, NG89536082
  • Climb the height of the tallest Munro:   Ben Nevis, 1344m, Fort William, NN16697127
There are also some difficulty challenges for you to have a go at.  To complete these you must climb all your routes throughout the weekend within a certain grade range.  These categories are:

  • Porta Ledgers:                      Moderate to Hard Severe
  • Winers, Diners & Climbers:   Severe to Hard Very Severe (HVS)
  • Scottish VS:                          Very Severe to E2
  • Nail Biters:                            E1+

Money raised will go towards helping Transition Extreme as a Scottish charity to better its facilities and fund projects and activities for other charities and organisations that may not otherwise have access to the recreational sports on offer.

For more information contact Duncan: duncan-paterson@transition-extreme.com

Transition Extreme relies on such fund-raising and grants as well as the public 'through the door' trade to continue to be sustainable.

Scottish Youth Bouldering Champion coaching at Transition!

Great news for ambitious climbers aged 8-17! Our weekend Performance Class (launched December 2009) is already full every Saturday, and now the Sunday class has received a major boost. Our own experienced instructor Piotr Wisthal will be joined by Rhys Maslen, age-group winner at the Scottish Youth Bouldering Championships. Their combined talents and a very small ratio of 1:3 means that this is the place to be if you're serious about pushing your grade.

___________________Rhys Maslen competing at the SYBC

Classes run from 10:00 - 12:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, and cost just £9 if you have your own kit, £10.50 if you need to hire. Please call reception on 01224 626279 to book your place.

Please note that you must be an experienced climber in order to attend these classes - if you need to learn how to tie in, belay and use the wall, please join one of our weekday classes first:

A Sunny Intro to Rock

After quiet anticipation of the looming weather front moving in over the weekend we were pleasantly greeted by sunshine for most of the day on Saturday.

Bottom roping warm up at Black Rock Gulch.

I met Aaron and Pierre down at the coast for a days climbing on their 'Intro to Rock' day.  With indoor experience and a keen interest in progressing their skills outdoors both the guys were psyched!

Climbing into the sun.

Taking in the beautiful day and some of the more accessible local crags we spent the day getting in as much climbing as possible whilst introducing the bigger concepts and thinking around Trad climbing.

Escaping the tide at Deceptive Wall.

Aaron seconding The Pobble (VS 4b**), Souter Head.

We looked at some simple anchor set-ups and both Aaron and Pierre had a go at setting them up themselves to bring each other up a climb.

A happy if not blinded by the sun Pierre!

A fantastic days weather and an even better days climbing!
